Jonathan Toubin, 40, is in intensive care at Oregon Health and Science University with numerous broken bones and internal injuries to a kidney and his liver, according to his friends.

He was in town for a show when around 11 a.m. on Thursday a taxicab smashed through his ground-floor room at the Jupiter Hotel at 800 E. Burnside Street and landed on top of him while he was in bed.

The driver, later identified as 52-year-old Terry Uding (she drives for Radio Cab), had suffered some type of medical emergency.

“I looked up and seen the cab was all the way inside the room,” said witness Dave Hunt. “Then I could see the guy lying on the bed. There was blood everywhere.”

“It kind of drove up and over the bed and it rested on the back side of the wall,” said Paul Corah with Portland Fire & Rescue.

Portland Police Officer Stuart Palmiter, a 19-year-veteran, arrived at the scene and enlisted the help of witnesses and hotel employees to lift the rear of the taxi, a Scion XB, off of the victim.

Toubin’s friend and former New York band member, Aaron Montaigne, said the whole thing is surreal.

“The main thing now is to be positive and send out good energy for his recovery,” he said.

Montaigne bartends at the Branx Club and Toubin DJs there during his tours across the U.S. Toubin was scheduled to be there Thursday evening.

“With this weighing on all of us, it’s definitely going to be a heavy night,” said Montaigne. “But all we can do is be positive.”

Christopher Roman was sentenced Friday as part of a plea deal.

Prosecutors say Roman was both drunk and high this past August when he crashed into a car that was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 5 in Vancouver.

Terra Pina and Angel Pena were both injured in the crash and they lost their child, Gabriel.

“I just remember saying ‘no’ when I saw him coming,” the infant’s mother, Terra Pina, said back in August following the crash. “I looked over at Angel and his seat was almost to the dashboard,” she added. “I turned around to see if Gabriel was OK and the whole – the whole rear end of the car was pushed up. I started screaming.”

Roman, he had a prior DUI conviction. Back in 2006 he pleaded guilty to drunk driving and spent four days in jail.

“He got a second chance and he threw it away,” Angel said in late August. “And not only that, he took something very, very special to us.”

The incident happened Saturday, December 10, in the evening around 9:15 p.m. in the St. Helens area. The parade boats had returned from a night on the river and had been docked for about an hour and a half.

As people began getting off the boats, 43-year-old John Sullivan of St. Helens slipped and fell from the top deck of a vessel called the ‘Trilogy.’

“(He) slipped because it was icy and he fell over the rail, onto the swimboard and off into the water,” said Jess Heitman, president of Christmas Ships, Inc.

Chief Jay Tappan with Columbia Fire & Rescue said those on board tried to get a rescue ring to Sullivan but he was unable to grab it.

“We heard the yelling and screaming of ‘man overboard’ so we scrambled immediately,” said Heitman.

Sullivan, who was not wearing a life jacket, was last seen about 100 feet downstream from the docks where he was reportedly struggling in the cold water. According to Tappan, the air temperature at the time was below freezing and there was ice on the docks and area roads.

Several rescue boats and a Coast Guard helicopter responded and they spent hours trying to find Sullivan, but the search was called off overnight due to the extremely cold conditions and swift current. The search continued on Sunday but Sullivan was not found.

Officers were investigating a disturbance in the 4700 block of NE 99th Avenue just before 1 a.m. Saturday,  12/10/11, according to Lt. Robert King of the Portland Police Bureau. A man that was not involved in the disturbance was backing his Jeep out of a nearby driveway when he hit a patrol car parked on the street.

The car was occupied by an officer and a prisoner, but neither was hurt.

The driver of the Jeep, later identified as 43-year-old Richard Beeler, sped away north on 99th Avenue causing other officers to dive out of the way to avoid being hit.

Beeler attempted to drive through Columbia Cemetery to get away, but he hit a berm and the Jeep went airborne and rolled over, landing on the passenger side.

“Beeler became resistive with officers as he was being taken into custody and he was Tased,” King said. He and a passenger, 31-year-old Ruth Ott, had felony warrants for drug manufacturing.

Beeler was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. He was then booked in the Multnomah County Detention Center on a long list of charges, including felony hit-and-run, DUII, resisting arrest and abuse of a memorial to the dead.

Ott was jailed on the outstanding felony warrant.

A bomb squad searched a home in Salem Tuesday as part of the investigation.

Ivan Velasco Rodriguez, a 31-year-old father of four, was killed in the Canby explosion.  He was trying to earn some extra money by helping the tenants move and collecting scrap metal, when a box suddenly blew up, investigators said. He died on the way to the hospital.

Tuesday afternoon, police said they had evidence indicating that the blast was caused by a pipe bomb inside a tool-type box in the driveway.

The tenants who lived in the Canby home were moving to a rental located near the intersection of 23rd and Market Street NE in Salem. That’s where police were searching Tuesday, some 30 miles away from Canby.

Witnesses watched as the bomb squad went through the Salem rental home and also a car parked in the driveway. When asked what the were looking for, police did not comment to KGW.

Rodriguez lived about two miles away from the scene of the Canby explosion, in an apartment with his wife and four young children.

Neighbors there were struggling with the sudden death of a man who they said was always doing what he could to help others in the community.

“He was just a happy-go-lucky man, a young kid of 31-years-old and he didn’t deserve this. Of course he wasn’t looking for it,” said Mini Acevedo, Rodriguez’s friend and supervisor at work.

The manager at Rodriguez’s apartment complex said it was unthinkable that anyone would intentionally hurt him. “He was a likeable guy, a church-going guy,” Erminia Acevedo said.
